Thantri case: Accused in custody till Aug 8

Kochi: The three accused in the Sabarimala Thantri Kandararu Mohanaru attack case, including key accused Sobha John, were on Friday remanded in police custody till August 8 by the Ernakulam chief judicial magistrate (CJM).Ernakulam CJM P.D. Sharanghdharan also adjourned hearing on the bail applications of the three accused to August 8.

The magistrate gave the ruling after considering an application, filed by the police on Thursday, seeking custody of the accused till August 11.

Police said further investigation was to be conducted in the presence of the accused at various places to locate the other accused and to find out the mobile phone and gold ornaments taken from the thantri.

The police has registered the case against the accused under IPC Sections 395 (robbery) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy).

Sobha John and co-accused Anil Kumar and Vijil had been remanded in judicial custody till August 17 by the court on Thursday and lodged in Ernakulam sub-jail.

The three were arrested on August 2 in connection with the July 23 "attack" on the Sabarimala thantri in Sobha's flat here.

Sobha John has been described by the police as a key link in an alleged sex racket in the city while Anil Kumar and Vijil were her accomplices.

Sobha was allegedly acting as a pimp and then blackmailing the people to whom she was ''supplying'' the girls, police said.

Thantri Kandararu Mohanaru, one of the main priests at the Sabarimala Ayyappa Temple, was sacked by the Travancore Devaswom Board on July 24 as reports of his alleged involvement in a sex racket surfaced.

How can Cong and I be divorced?: Natwar

New Delhi: Former external affairs minister K. Natwar Singh, on Friday, said he and the Congress could not be divorced and he will reply to any questions asked by the party in connection with his indictment by the Pathak Inquiry Authority in the Iraqi oil-for-food scam.

Singh did not respond when asked about the possibility of his joining Samajwadi Party.

"The only strength I had was the Congress party. So how can the Congress party and I be divorced?" he told reporters outside Parliament when asked if he was planning to quit the party.

In a brief statement to the media after his indictment by the Pathak panel in the Iraqi oil-for-food scam, Singh had questioned the clean chit given to the Congress party in the matter.

"How can any aspersion be cast on me and Congress given a clean chit," the senior Congress leader said.

Singh had resigned from the Cabinet, in December last year, in the wake of the political storm triggered by the Volcker Committee's findings that he and Congress were non-contractual beneficiaries in the UN oil-for-food programme during Saddam Hussain regime.
